Looking to do a little good in Princeton, NJ this Holiday Season? Consider donating to or volunteering for Mercer Street Friends. Here is a little about them. Mercer Street Friends is a human care organization providing solutions to the helpless and the hungry, while working tirelessly to touch the lives of its youth. Founded in 1958 by Quakers, it is now the largest source of government and privately donated food in Mercer County, New Jersey. They work to end the hunger that every day families struggle with, hoping to make a positive impact in the lives of many. The Mercer Street Friends Food Bank sends 3 million pounds of groceries to food pantries, soup kitchens, day cares, youth centers, and shelters. The Food Bank reaches 30,000 children, adults and seniors that are at risk for poverty and hunger. Now during the holiday season, they are looking to help the unfortunate by distributing produce and meals to those that are in need.
But Mercer Street aims to help more than just the poverty stricken. They are looking to change the lives of hundreds of kids through the ages of 4 and 18. Mercer Street Friends Children and Youth Services Division programs provide violence prevention, vocational training and clinical services to the young and their families, while Mercer Street Friends Abbott Classrooms receive 100 infants, toddlers, and pre-school students for full-day schooling programs. They provide a safe, and stimulating environment for children to learn and feel communicate with others their age. Mercer Street Friends also provides the first and only after-school program for special needs children that attend the Mercer County Special Services District.
Children aren’t the only ones that are able to receive an excellent education in Mercer County. Mercer Street Friends Parenting and Adult Services helps parents receive the training that they need to become employed and build a more stable life for themselves and their children. The Adult Basic Skills program provides literary skills that enable adults to achieve their GED.
Each year, Mercer Street Friends stops at nothing to give, especially during the holiday season. And each year, a family is counting Mercer Street Friends as one of their blessings.
